UAB Sweeps Series Against Marshall with Walk-Off Triple

BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team won in dramatic fashion today versus Marshall. The Blazers (17-10, 5-1) led for most of the game, gave up the lead in the top of the seventh, and won on a walk-off triple at the bottom of the seventh.

"Just a complete, gutsy effort by our entire team." Said head coach Joe Guthrie. "Every player. We need to continue to build and improve from here."

The first inning was scoreless, as Marshall (16-9, 0-3) stranded a runner on base, and UAB went three up, three down. The second and third innings didn't include any scoring. Marshall left two runners stranded in the top of the fourth, to set up UAB's next turn at bat.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Blazers got on the board, with a Lindsey Smith 2 RBI single that brought home Lilly Crowe and Chloe Bahruth.

In the top of the fifth, the Thundering Herd answered with a 2 run homer to center field. After Marshall didn't get anyone home in the top of the sixth, the Blazers seemed to wrap up the game in the bottom of the sixth, when Alyssa Aguilar hit an RBI single that scored Sierra Frazier. Aguilar later scored on an error, and Olivia Valbak hit an RBI single that brought home Lauren Brock to make the game 5-2 in favor of UAB.

The Herd would not go down easily however, and roared to life from home plate at the top of the seventh. Marshall got a single RBI, a three run home run, and a single home run in consecutive at-bats to go up 7-5.

With their final chance at bat looming, the Blazers needed some late game heroics to secure the win. UAB did just that, thanks to an impressive and timely hitting display. Faith Hegh singled, and Sierra Frazier doubled to left field. Lilly Crowe hit an RBI double to left field that brought home Hegh. Down by one, Jolie Readeaux came up to bat with one out on the board and a runner on third. Readeaux then made the play of the day, crushing a triple to right field that scored Lilly Crowe and Sierra Frazier, and gave the Blazers the climactic 8-7 victory, and a series sweep.

Makenna Pierce (4-2) was given the pitching win in relief. Bella Wiggins, Sierra Frazier, and Lilly Crowe all recorded doubles. Jolie Readeaux hit the game winning triple, and also recorded six putouts at first base. The Blazers recorded 11 hits on the day.

The Blazers will host #4 Alabama this Wednesday at Mary Bowers Field, with first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m. It will be 90's Night at Mary Bowers Field, with 90s themed music and promotions.
