Ninth Inning Rally Powers UAB to a 6-5 Win Over Southeastern

HAMMOND, La. — Josh Sears' go-ahead three-run home run with two outs in the ninth, led the UAB baseball team to a 6-5 victory over Southeastern on Sunday afternoon. UAB improves to 6-1 on the season.

Southeastern (3-4) got on the board first after a triple and then a RBI single to take the 1-0 lead.

Freshman Henry Hunter responded in the second and hit his second home run of the series out to left field to tie the game at one.

The Lions responded in the second inning with two runs. Southeastern added a run in the third to go up 4-1.

With bases loaded in the seventh, John Marc Mullins came up to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to two, 4-2.

After a scoreless eighth, the Blazers looked for a rally in the ninth to extend the game. Back-to-back singles by Brandon Willoughby and Tyler Waugh put runners on first and second with no outs. With Mullins at the plate, he sent a single up the middle to score Willoughby from second.

Down to the last out with two on, Sears stepped up to the plate and belted a three-run homer out to left field to put the Blazers on top for the first time, 6-4.

Southeastern looked to respond in the bottom of the inning. The Lions drove in a run to cut the lead to one with two outs. Jonah Smith, who came into pitch with one out in the seventh, got the final batter to strikeout looking to close out the game, 6-5.

Smith (1-0, 1.20 ERA) picked up his first win of the season after tossing 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. As a team, UAB has recorded its sixth 10-plus hit game, including the past five in a row, with 11 total hits this afternoon.
