BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team split two games on the second day of the Blazer Classic. The Blazers defeated North Dakota 2-0, and fell to Murray State 9-0.
GAME 1: UAB 2, NORTH DAKOTA 0
Lindsey Smith hit her first career home run, and Sarah Cespedes (3-1) threw four strikeouts versus the Fighting Hawks. The game was deadlocked out of the gate, with each team pitching well, and playing solid defense. Neither squad was able to put any runs on the board through five innings. In the 5th inning, UAB was able to break the scoring drought, thanks to a Lindsey Smith home run to left field. After that, the Blazers utilized their deep roster, subbing in Taylor Yeager as a pinch runner after Jolie Readeaux was walked to first base. Bella Wiggins got on base with a single, and Alyssa Aguilar singled after coming in as a pinch hitter. A Lauren Brock RBI got Yeager home, and the Blazer lead was extended to 2-0.
North Dakota fought hard to get back in the game at the top of the 6th inning, but the Blazer defense held firm, and no runs were scored. In the bottom of the sixth, UAB nearly scored again to extend their lead, but were struck and grounded out with runners on third and second base. At the top of the seventh, the Fighting Hawks had one last chance to score, but the Blazer defense stood its ground once again, and the game ended on a strikeout by Bailey Tindell.
GAME 2: UAB 0, MURRAY STATE 9
The Blazer's second game of the day started with a quick scoring run by the Racers, who tallied three runs at the top of the first via RBI. The Blazer defense tightened up for the next three innings, but UAB was unable to gain momentum hitting the ball, and Murray State held a 3-0 lead heading into the 5th. Unfortunately for the Blazers, the Murray State bats heated up in the 5th, and the Racers scored six runs, two by error, and four via RBI. Facing a 9-0 deficit, UAB got up to bat with a chance to extend the game, but despite a double by Bella Wiggins, the Blazers were unable to get on the board, and the game ended after the 5th inning.
Bailey Tindell (0-3) was on the hook for the pitching loss. Faith Hegh and Bella Wiggins both recorded doubles versus the Racers.
The Blazers have a rematch versus Murray State tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
