Softball Falls in 12 Innings to Murray State

BIRMINGHAM- In a long and strenuous 12 inning game, UAB softball fell to Murray State, 8-4. The game started off with a home run by Murray State (7-4), followed by an RBI in the 5^th inning. The Blazers (4-7) made a furious rally to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the 7^th, before going down in the 12^th inning.

After the opening homer from Murray State, the scoring pace halted, as the Blazers made quick defensive adjustments, and neither team scored for the next four innings. In the 5^th, the Racers batted another runner in via a triple to go up by two. UAB couldn't put any runs on the board in the 5^th or 6^th, but Murray State failed to put the Blazers away, and UAB went to bat in the bottom of the 7^th with one chance to extend the game. The Blazers did just that, thanks to a score by Sierra Frazier via an Alyssa Aguilar RBI, and a first base error by the Racers that allowed Aguilar to score.

With the game knotted up at 2, extra innings began. UAB subbed in Bailey Tindell at pitcher in the 8^th inning, and the two teams engaged in a defensive struggle for the next three innings. The Blazers nearly captured victory in the bottom of the tenth on a Bella Wiggins double, but Alyssa Aguilar was narrowly tagged out at home plate. At the top of the 11^thinning, the Racers appeared headed for victory after scoring off of an RBI, but the Blazer defense prevented any further damage and went to the bottom of the 11^th with another chance to keep the game going. UAB made it happen, thanks to a Tyler Armistead RBI that tied the game at 3-3. The Blazers had a chance to walk it off, but the Racer defense managed to hold, and the game went into a 12^th inning. It was in this inning that the Blazer defense, that had played so well all game long, finally gave out. Murray State strung together five runs, that all came on a flurry of hits. The Blazers had one last shot to even the score, but ultimately fell short, despite Sierra Frazier scoring courtesy of a Bella Wiggins RBI double. At the end, the final score read 8-4.

Bailey Tindell (0-4) was on the hook for the loss, despite a valiant performance that tallied two strikeouts over four long innings of work. The Blazers deployed all five of their pitchers during today's game. Bella Wiggins recorded two doubles today. Faith Hegh made an incredible catch in centerfield late in the extra inning period.

UAB softball will be in action this weekend in the Blazer Invite versus IUPUI, North Alabama, and Austin Peay.
