BIRMINGHAM- The track and field team will host the Conference USA Indoor Championships for the 11th straight season Saturday and Sunday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The meet is set to begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the heptathlon followed by the women's pentathlon at 9:15 a.m. and events will continue the rest of the day. On championship Sunday, the meet begins at 8:30 a.m. with the heptathlon. The awards presentations will wrap up the event at 3:40 p.m.
"This is the culmination of our indoor season." Said Coach Kurt Thomas. "Our ladies have worked hard, overcome some COVID setbacks and are ready to compete hard for points at the conference meet. Maira Gauges and Laney Kronz start us off in the Pentathlon Saturday morning and have a chance for good points. Our vaulters and long jumpers will have a good chance at points with Anna Massa (PV) and Kaylie Wright (long jump) ranked high. Lisa Petkov (400m), the hurdlers (Kat Duren and Makiyah Sills) and Regina Harris (800m) all have chances to qualify for finals. The shot putters, (Birthe Franck-Petersen and Rosalind Staie) the DMR and 4x4 relays as well as Lauren Robinson and Laura Thompson (5k) will race hard for points. We've had a good year so far and our team is ready to fight and compete one last time at these championships."
UAB track and field has been on a hot streak as of late, with three school records being set in the last two weeks of competition, dozens of PRs, and two consecutive Blazers earning weekly C-USA awards. (Duren and Massa). The Blazers will be looking to make a statement at the CrossPlex this weekend, and put a bow on what has been a very successful indoor season.
