UAB Men's Tennis Travels to Mississippi for Matches Against Lamar, Southern Miss

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's tennis team will travel to Mississippi this weekend for a pair of matches in Hattiesburg. The Blazers will take on Lamar on Saturday at noon and Southern Miss on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Both matches will be played at the Golden Eagles' Southern Miss Tennis Complex.
UAB LATELY
UAB went 1-1 this past weekend in Fort Myers, Florida, dropping its opening match of the weekend at FGCU 5-2 before winning by the same score in Saturday's triumph over Buffalo.
In Saturday's win over Buffalo, the Blazers dropped the doubles point, but they took control in singles play with five victories. Michal Lusovsky, Vojtech Podzemny, Roman Postolka, Noah Malige and Martin Vasquez all earned wins to help lead the Blazers to the match victory. Malige's win on court five clinched the match for UAB when the Blazers took a 4-1 lead.
In Friday's setback at FGCU, The Blazers battled back to a 2-2 tie after dropping the doubles point. FGCU, however, would win the final three singles matches to earn the 5-2 win. Vojtech Podzemny and Thanos Spyropoulos earned victories in straight sets in Friday's match against the Eagles.
LAMAR LATELY
Lamar is 5-3 on the season after going 11-9 in 2020-21.
Lamar holds a 28-18 record in singles matches and a 14-10 mark in doubles play. Freshman Martin Garcia-Ripoll leads the Cardinals with a 6-1 singles record. In doubles action, the Cardinals are 14-10 overall with the pairing of Garcia-Ripoll and Joshua Taylor leading the way with a 5-2 overall record.
UAB is 2-1 all-time against Lamar, winning the last outing 4-0.
SOUTHERN MISS LATELY
Southern Miss has opened the season 2-1 after sweeping Chattanooga 4-0 on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles are 6-7 in singles play this season and 5-3 in doubles. Sophomore Olimjon Nabiev is the only player with a positive singles record at 1-0. The pairing of graduate Dhruv Sunish and sophomore Shamirul Shahril are 3-0 in doubles this season.
The Blazers are 16-9 all-time against the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles won the most recent matchup 4-3 on Feb. 27, 2021, in Birmingham.
UP NEXT
UAB will return to Birmingham for its first home match since Jan. 30 with a matchup against ETSU on Saturday, Feb. 26. First serve at the Lakeshore Tennis Courts is set for 2 p.m.
