BIRMINGHAM — Freshman Peyton Puckett's walk-off base hit in the ninth inning powered the UAB baseball team to an 8-7 victory over Northwestern on Friday at Young Memorial Field.
Freshman Carson Myers picked up his first-career win after tossing four innings in relief with five strikeouts. Jackson Reynolds made his Blazer debut as a starter, going five innings with seven strikeouts.
Josh Sears led the Blazers at the plate going 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and a walk.
"It was good for our guys to finish the way they did today," head coach Casey Dunn said. "Jackson and Carson did a nice job of keeping us in the game and letting us win it late."
The UAB (1-0) bats started hot with John Marc Mullins leading off with a single and advanced home on a Sears two-run blast out to left center field for the early 2-0 advantage. The Green and Gold added another run in the first on a Henry Hunter groundout that scored Puckett to go up 3-0.
Northwestern (0-1) responded with six runs on four hits in the top of the second to take the lead, 6-3.
With bases loaded in the sixth, Christian Hall came in to pinch hit and hit a sacrifice fly out to right to cut the Wildcat lead to two. A Tyler Waugh single and Darryl Buggs reaching on an error, brough in two more runs to tie the game, 6-6.
The Wildcats brought in their seventh run of the game on an error to take the one run lead, 7-6.
Bases loaded for the third time in the game, Puckett hit a single right over the third base bag to score Sears and Matthew Golda for the first win of the season.
