UAB Baseball Opens 2022 Season Against Northwestern at Young Memorial Field

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team begins its 2022 campaign when it welcomes Northwestern for a four-game Opening Weekend series at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers and the Wildcats meet for a 2 p.m. first pitch on Friday followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.
"I am excited to start the process," head coach Casey Dunn said. "We have talked a lot as a team about being the best we can in May and Friday we get to start the journey."

The series marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
BEGINNING OF THE DUNN ERA
Casey Dunn was named the Blazers' sixth head coach in program history on June 23, 2021. Dunn comes to UAB after 17 seasons at Samford. During his time with the Bulldogs, Dunn had a career record of 530-422 with three NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2021 in the Starkville Regional.
ABOUT THE BLAZERS
UAB returns 17 members from the 2021 squad and welcomes 23 newcomers. Last season, the Blazers finished with a record of 18-36 and a 11-21 mark in Conference USA play.
Highlighting the returners from last season are Tyler O'Clair, Caleb Floyd and John Marc Mullins. O'Clair, a right-handed pitcher, paced the Blazers' pitching staff in games started (13), shutouts (1) and strikeouts (64). He was second in innings pitched (78.0) and ERA (4.04) amongst starters. The Calera, Ala. native had a record of 5-4 last season and notched his first-career complete game shutout in a 9-0 victory at Marshall.
Floyd, a senior outfielder, leads the returners in average (.289), doubles (7) and home runs (4) from last season. Mullins, a junior infielder, saw 54 games started last season all at shortstop. This season, Mullins moves across the infield over to second base. Mullins is second among returners in batting average (.238) and led the team last season in walks (20).
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN
Northwestern is coming off a 15-21 season in which all games were played within the Big 10 Conference. The Wildcats are under the direction of first-year head coach Josh Reynolds, who was promoted to interim head coach in May 2021.
UAB PRESEASON HONORS
Freshman catcher Henry Hunter was named to the D1Baseball Conference USA Top 10 Impact First Year Freshman. The Blazers were picked to finish 11th in the Conference USA preseason poll.
