UAB Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader Against Northwestern

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball swept the Saturday doubleheader versus Northwestern at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers won game one 4-1 in a seven inning contest and game two 10-4.
UAB is 3-0 to begin the season for the first time since 2019.
"Today was a great day," head coach Casey Dunn. "It's really hard to win both end of a doubleheader and our guys pulled it out. We really attacked the strike zone on the mound and got some big hits."
GAME ONE – UAB 4, NORTHWESTERN 1
Junior Tyler O'Clair got the start for UAB, going five innings with three strikeouts and giving up one run. Brady Greene picked up his first save of the season after tossing one shutout inning with a strikeout.
Redshirt junior JC Sewell made his Blazer debut in the sixth, pitching a perfect inning. Christian Hall led UAB at the plate going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
The Blazers opened up the scoring in the second off a Brandon Willoughby two-run home run to left field that scored Hall, who reached base on a triple.
Northwestern's only run came in the third on a solo home run by Anthony Calarco, cutting the UAB lead to one.
With bases loaded in the fourth, Matthew Golda hit a sacrifice fly that scored Joseph Kiel to bring game one to its final score, 4-1.

GAME TWO – UAB 10, NORTHWESTERN 4
Freshman Thomas Ballard picked up his first career win after going 3.2 shutout innings with five strikeouts and no hits given up in 13 batters faced.
Northwestern (0-3) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after their first two innings. The Wildcats scored a run in the first off a Jay Breshears single and two runs in the second.
Darryl Buggs hit a RBI double in the second for the Blazers' first run of the game. In the fourth with bases loaded, Golda drew a walk, cutting the Northwester lead to one, 3-2.
The runs came alive for UAB in the sixth, tallying seven runs on three hits. A Josh Sears hit by pitch with bases loaded tied the game at three. Caleb Floyd hit his first double of the season to drive in two runs for the first lead of the game for UAB at 5-3. Back-to-back hits by Hall and Henry Hunter brought the score to 8-3. Hall was brought in on a wild pitch for the final run of the sixth, for a six-run lead.
The Blazers added an insurance run in the seventh after Gavin Lewis Jr. reached on an error that scored sears.
Northwestern scored the final run of the game in the ninth with two outs, bringing the contest to its final score of 10-4.
