BIRMINGHAM – Senior Nick Robillard won the individual title and the UAB men's golf team placed second at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate hosted by South Alabama at RTJ Magnolia Grove Crossings.
Robillard was on fire the entire week as he finished the tournament at -11 by shooting 68-70-67 = 205. Robillard's final round of five under 67 moved him from third to first as he won the tournament by three stokes over Kent State's Chris Vandette.
The Blazers (-14) placed second overall and only finished behind Florida State (-16) who had a monster final round by shooting 273 (-15) to propel up the scoreboard and claim the team victory. No. 20 Illinois (-6), Kansas State (-5) and Toledo (-2) rounded out the top five.
"These guys worked so hard this week and played great golf throughout," said head coach Matt Whall. "It's just unfortunate when you run into a hot team down the stretch. We learned a lot about ourselves this week and will be stronger for it. Ultimately, I'm really proud of all of them for what they achieved this week.
"Nick played solid all week and his putter warmed up a little today to allow himself to make the most of the opportunities. I'm really pleased for him to get his second college win and hopefully this springboards him into a big finish to his UAB career."
Sophomore Khavish Varadan, the 35th-ranked golfer in the country, also had a great showing by finishing in a tie for fourth place overall at -6. Varadan shot 67-70-73 and notched his third top 10 finish of the year and his second top five.
Alfie Fox (69-68-78 = 215, -1) recorded his fourth top 20 finish of the season by tying for 18th overall, while Paul Bruce (72-74-76 = 222, +6) and Ethan Hagood (72-75-76 + 223, +7) placed T47 and T51, respectively.
The Blazers are now 54-13-0 overall this season and have finished no worse than sixth place in any of their five tournaments this year.
UAB is back in action in two weeks when the Blazers head to Las Vegas for the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate hosted by Coastal Carolina.
