LAFAYETTE- Softball dropped its first two games of the season versus No. 19 Louisiana on Friday at Lamson Park.
The Blazers (0-2) fell in the first game 2-0, and 23-0 in second.
Sarah Cespedes and Makenna Pierce pitched the first game, while Bailey Tindell, Makenna Pierce, Olivia Valbak and Arden Plugge all took turns pitching in the second game.
Cespedes was on the hook for the circle loss in the first game, pitching five innings, allowing seven hits, two runs, and a strikeout. Makenna Pierce pitched in relief for two innings, and struck out two batters.
Bailey Tindell was attributed the loss in the second game, allowing three hits and five runs. Makenna Pierce, Arden Plugge, and Olivia Valbak pitched in relief, and combined to give up 16 hits and strike out two batters.
GAME 1: Louisiana 2, UAB 0
The first game was a defensive slugfest all the way through, starting with a stolen base by Lauren Brock, before the Blazers popped a fly to third base, and then struck out to end their first turn at bat in the first inning. The Ragin' Cajuns (2-0) held off the Blazers from the mound, and scored two runs via RBI late in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the game.
The Blazers played well in the field the entire game, but were unable to find success hitting the ball. The final five innings were scoreless for both teams, and despite strong defensive play late in the contest, UAB was unable to get on the board, and Louisiana won the game 2-0.
GAME 2: Louisiana 23, UAB 0
The second contest started off similar to the first one, but the Ragin' Cajuns found a rhythm hitting the ball in the second inning, to go up 11-0. The game started to slip away from UAB after the scoring run, and Louisiana would stretch the lead to 17-0 at the end of the third inning. Louisiana scored six more runs in the 4th inning, held off the Blazers in the 5th, and ended the game to make the final score 23-0.
Faith Hegh made an outstanding play in the second inning of the first game, backpedaling to catch a would-be home run against the back wall.
Freshman Lindsey Smith made several impressive plays in both games from her third base spot.
Jolie Readeaux made a handful of solid plays at first base in both games.
UAB will be in action tomorrow versus Tulsa at 1:00 p.m. and McNeese State at 6:00 p.m.
