Walker, Gaines Lead UAB to New Year's Eve Win Over UTSA

BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball (12-2, 3-0 C-USA) used a 13-0 run just before halftime to stretch the lead en route to a 90-67 win over UTSA (6-8, 0-3 C-USA). Jordan Walker led the way with 31 points while hitting seven three-pointers while Eric Gaines added 18 points with six rebounds and seven assists.
Jelly Walker scored his 1,000th point as a Blazer in the first half during in his 47th game at UAB. He is now the fastest player to reach 1,000 points as a Blazer, overtaking Robert Vaden's previous record of 50 games.
After trailing early in the first half, UAB used a 10-0 run that included six points from Walker to take control. Late in the half, The Blazers used an 11-0 run over the final two minutes to take a 23-point advantage into halftime.
UTSA took advantage of the Blazers' shooting struggles early in the second half. The Roadrunners cut the advantage to 15 after six minutes and the visitors were able to cut it down to 14 at the 10-minute mark, but that would be as close as the game would get.
The Blazers shot a season-best 11-for-21 (.524) from beyond the arc in the game and Walker knocked down a pair of three-pointers down the stretch to secure the 90-67 victory.
NOTES
The Blazers will travel to Boca Raton on Thursday, Jan. 5 for a showdown with FAU, who currently sits at No. 10 in the NET rankings. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
