UAB Women’s Soccer Prepares for C-USA Championship

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's soccer team looks to win its third league title as the 2022 Conference USA Championship commences Wednesday when the 3-seed Blazers take on 6-seed UTSA at 12:30 p.m. (CT). The single-elimination event is hosted by Charlotte and all matches will take place at Transamerica Stadium.
ABOUT UAB (9-3-5, 6-1-3)
The Blazers finished third in Conference USA with 21 points, one point behind North Texas and six points behind regular season champion Rice. The six conference victories is the most for UAB since they won seven matches in 2017.
ABOUT UTSA (9-5-4, 4-3-3)
The Roadrunners finished sixth in Conference USA with 15 points.
THE SERIES VS. UTSA
In six matches, UAB leads the series 3-1-2. Wednesday marks the first time UAB and UTSA have met in the Conference USA Championship.
LAST MATCH VS. UTSA
UAB extended its unbeaten streak to eight matches and remained undefeated in Conference USA play after its 1-1 draw against UTSA at PNC Field on Oct. 9. The Blazers fell behind early when UTSA's Kiran Singh put the Roadrunners on the board in the third minute. UAB got the equalizer in the 74th minute when Hannah Clark scored her first career goal.

Head coach Erica Demers was named Conference USA Coach of the Year for the first time in her career. The sixth-year head coach finished the season 9-3-5 and put together a program record 10-match unbeaten streak from Sept. 4 to Oct. 16. Additionally, her C-USA record of 6-1-3 marks the first time in school history the Blazers only had one loss in conference play.
FEELING 50
Demers notched her 50th career victory against WKU on Oct. 16. Her first victory was a 1-0 win over Georgia Southern in her head coaching debut on Aug. 18, 2017.

On August 17, Conference USA announced that Asha Zuniga has been named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. This held true as she was named league's Defensive Player of the Year and a member of the All-Conference First Team. Additionally, she was Defensive Player of the Week Aug. 23, Sept. 20 and Oct. 18 as well as a First Team All-Academic selection. The captain is tied for first in C-USA with three game-winning goals while anchoring a backline that had a GAA of 1.00 overall and 0.40 in C-USA play.
A KEEPER WORTH KEEPING
Eve Beyer, the Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 4, was named All-Conference Second Team. Beyer leads the league in GAA (0.55), save percentage (.833) and shutouts (8). She ranks 17th, 45th and 25th in the NCAA in those categories, respectively.
WHEELS UP!
After finishing sixth best in C-USA and a first on UAB with five assists, Jessica Wheeler was named All-Conference Second Team. She also had back-to-back game-winning goals against Samford and Middle Tennessee and set up the GWG against UTEP.
AN IM-PRES-IVE SEASON
Carlyn Presley earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team after putting together a season that saw her score six times, tying her for the team lead and fifth in C-USA. She also added a pair of assists for 14 points, also trying her for most on the Blazers and seventh in C-USA. Additionally, Presley was a Second Team All-Academic selection.
TURN THE PAGE
A year after taking home All-Freshman Team honors, Kendall Page was selected All-Conference Second Team. She is one of five Blazers to start every game this season.
I AM THE LAW
Freshman Stella Lawson was named All-Conference Third Team as well as to the All-Freshman Team. She scored six goals, including a hat trick against Kennesaw State.
MONEY MORGAN
Joining Zuniga and Presley on the All-Academic Team was Morgan Halliwill. She was selected to the second team.
CLARK GETS HER FIRST GOAL AND FIRST HONOR
After scoring her first career goal, which was the equalizer in UAB's 1-1 tie against UTSA, Hannah Clark was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 11th.

The Blazers are ranked No. 4 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Ranking South Region poll. UAB has been ranked in 10 of the poll's 11 weeks.

UAB TO THE AAC STARTING IN 2022-23
On Thurs., Oct. 21, American Athletic Conference officials announced that WKU, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice and Texas San Antonio will join UAB as new members in the AAC. They will compete against current AAC members East Carolina, Memphis, Navy, USF, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State. The UAB women's soccer team will begin AAC play in the 2023 season.
