BOCA RATON, Fla. - The UAB football team suffered a 24-17 loss to Florida Atlantic on Saturday evening at FAU Stadium.
The Blazers (4-4, 2-3 C-USA) had a chance to tie the game on the final possession, but a pass breakup in the end zone on 4th-and-10 with eight seconds remaining sealed the victory for the Owls (4-5, 3-2 C-USA).
The nation's leading rusher DeWayne McBride had 24 carries for 168 yards and a touchdown, bringing his season total to 1,146 rushing yards (163.7/game). He helped UAB outgain FAU 472-359 for the game.
Making his first career start, quarterback Jacob Zeno finished 18-of-32 for 192 yards and a touchdown.
Tyler Taylor led the UAB defense with nine tackles while Kelle Sanders and Noah Wilder each added seven. For Wilder, he became the fourth player in program history to tally 300 career tackles and now has 305 total.
The Blazers fell behind 10-0 after the first quarter, but outscored the Owls 14-0 in the second to lead 14-10 at the half.
McBride put the Blazers on the board with 14:49 left in the first half as he busted a 63-yarder for his 12th rushing touchdown of the season.
UAB's next possession was its longest scoring drive of the year as the Blazers went 99 yards in nine plays, which was capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass from Zeno to TJ Jones for UAB's first lead of the game.
The Owls though, scored two unanswered touchdowns to open the second half on a pair of passes by N'Kosi Perry in the form of 50 yards and eight yards to build a 24-14 lead with 5:56 left in the third. A Matt Quinn 32-yard field goal with 1:18 left brought the score to 24-17 entering the fourth quarter.
Neither team would score in the fourth, and FAU's late defensive stand secured the victory.
