BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's golf team won its first tournament of the 2022-23 season with a convincing victory at The Carolina Cup on Tuesday at Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Blazers (292-276-276 = 844, -20) were in seventh after the opening round, but fired the lowest score of the tournament (276) in back-to-back rounds to run away with the team title and win by 13 strokes.
"Our work really came together this week," said Head Coach Matt Whall. "The guys were phenomenal from start to finish. Our seniors led from the front and played solid golf even with some injury and illness issues, and the younger guys have been maturing and developing every day so it was great to see their scores coming down too. It's been brewing for a while so it's great for the guys to see the rewards for their work. It was a real team effort from start to finish."
UAB had three players finish inside the top 10, led by Khavish Varadan who placed second overall at -11 and just one stroke behind the individual winner. Varadan (71-66-68 = 204, -11) was under par in all three rounds, and shot a 29 on the front nine during his second round which led him to a 66 (-6) on Monday.
Alfix Fox placed fourth overall at -7 and was also under par in all three of his rounds. Fox shot 71-70-68 to help UAB solidify the team victory.
Ethan Hagood was UAB's third player inside the top 10 by tying for seventh at -3. After an opening round 75, Hagood shot 70-68, and moved up 16 spots in the final round to notch his second-consecutive tournament inside the top 10.
Redshirt freshman Cole Imig (77-70-72 = 219, +3) registered his first collegiate top 20 finish by tying for 20th, while Paul Bruce rounded out the lineup in 40th place (75-72-76 = 23, +7).
This is UAB's first team win since last season's Desert Mountain Collegiate victory in Scottsdale, Ariz., and UAB is now 24-17-0 overall this season.
The Blazers look to carry this momentum into the Daniel Island Intercollegiate which is hosted by Charleston Southern on Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
