UAB Student-Athletes Excel Academically in Fall 2021

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Department of Athletics once again excelled in the classroom as Blazer student-athletes posted a 3.23 GPA for the Fall 2021 semester. This marks 16 consecutive semesters that the department's student-athletes have had over a 3.0 GPA. Overall, 16 of UAB's 18 sports had a 3.0 GPA or higher during this past semester.
"I am extremely proud of the dedication and hard work UAB student-athletes once again displayed in the classroom," Director of Athletics Mark Ingram stated. "The commitment to Win Championships, Graduate with Honors and Make a Difference continues to be on display as our student-athletes are excelled in the classroom once again."
In total, 272 student-athletes (63%) earned a 3.00 GPA or above, 184 (42%) earned a 3.5 GPA or above and 87 (20%) earned a perfect 4.00 GPA. Nineteen student-athletes, representing 14 different majors, earned their degrees in December. Eight of the 14 graduated with honors including four that graduated Summa Cum Laude.
"We are extremely proud of UAB Blazer student-athletes' academic accomplishments during the Fall 2021 semester. In these challenging times, they continue to display their commitment to excellence. This mindset will propel them to greater success during the remainder of their collegiate careers and beyond graduation," said Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services Antwan Joseph. "Also, I would like to acknowledge the UAB SASS staff for their dedication and work with our student-athletes in their quest to become the best version of themselves."
Individually, three Blazers earned spots on Conference USA All-Academic teams - Stella Kiss and Lexxe Lipsey from women's soccer and Laura Thompson from women's cross country. Kiss, an honors business accounting major is a four-time member of the Presidential Honors List. Lipsey, who is graduating this summer with her MBA is a three-time member of the Presidential Honors List. Thompson, who is majoring in computer science in the accelerated bachelor/master program, is a seven-time member of the Presidential Honors List.
