UAB Men's Tennis Drops Spring Season Opener at No. 21 Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The UAB men's tennis team dropped its spring season opener at No. 21 Mississippi State 6-1 on Sunday evening at the Rula Tennis Pavilion.
After dropping the doubles point, multiple Blazers competed in tight singles matches on their respective courts. Vojtech Podzemny, a sophomore from Opava, Czech Republic, battled back from an opening set loss to defeat Mississippi State's Bautista Vilicich 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 1-0 (11-9). Podzemny's victory helped the Blazers clinch a point in the overall team match and conclude their trip to Starkville with a victory.
On court two, Thanos Spyropoulos won the first set of his match in convincing fashion, earning a 6-2 opening set victory over reigning ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year Nemanja Malesevic. Malesevic, however, rebounded from the opening set defeat to earn a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) win over Spyropoulos.
No. 22 Florian Broska defeated Roman Postolka 6-4, 6-4 on court one, while Mississippi State's Carles Hernandez and Gregor Ramskogler each earned 6-2, 6-3 wins over Martin Vasquez and Nikola Puric, respectively, on courts four and five. MSU's Davide Tortora also earned a straight set victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Chase Parker.
Postolka and Puric, Parker and Podzemny, and Spyropoulos and Vasquez teamed up with each other in doubles on Sunday.
UAB will look to capture its first win of the spring season when the Blazers battle Tennessee Tech on Saturday in Homewood, Alabama. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
