UAB Records 6-1 Win Over North Alabama

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's tennis team captured its first win of the spring season with a 6-1 win over North Alabama on Sunday afternoon at the UAB Campus Courts. The win marks the Blazers' first spring triumph under first-year head coach Justin DeSanto.
UAB won the doubles point to open the match with a 1-0 advantage. The doubles pairing of Michal Lusovsky and Thanos Spyropoulos notched a 6-3 victory on court one, while UAB's court three pairing of Roman Postolka and Nikola Puric recorded a 6-2 win to clinch the doubles point. North Alabama's pairing of Chris Zhang and Jamie Bixby won on court two over UAB's Martin Vasquez and Vojtech Podzemny.
The Blazers continued their strong play in singles action, registering victories in straight sets on courts one through four. Podzemny quickly dispatched UNA's Nazar Fedoryshyn 6-1, 6-0, on court four to set the tone.
UAB then earned victories from Lusovsky [6-1, 7-6 (8-6)], Spyropoulos (6-3, 6-3) and Postolka (6-4, 6-2) to make it 5-0 UAB. Spyropoulos rallied from an early 3-2 deficit in the first set before winning four straight games to win the first set. He then repeated the same result in set two to clinch his singles match.
The Blazers closed out Sunday's action with two matches on courts five and six. Puric earned a victory in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) on court six to make it 6-0 Blazers. Vasquez dropped UAB's final match of the day to UNA's Guilherme Diniz 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (13-11).
UAB improved its record against North Alabama to 19-0 all-time with Sunday's victory.
The Blazers will return to the court Friday with a match at South Alabama. First serve in Mobile, Alabama, is set for 2 p.m.
