UAB Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Schedule Sunday at No. 21 Mississippi State

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's tennis team will open its 2021-22 spring schedule Sunday when the Blazers battle No. 21 Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi. Sunday's spring season opener will begin at 4 p.m. at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
UAB LATELY
The Blazers competed in six events in the fall under first-year head coach Justin DeSanto. Roman Postolka notched three consecutive victories in the qualifying rounds at the ITA Southern Regionals in October, which placed him and fellow Blazer Michal Lusovsky in the Round of 32. In doubles, Lusovsky and teammate Thanos Spyropoulos advanced to the Round of 16 main draw with a pair of doubles victories.
Nikola Puric, Vojtech Podzemny, Chase Parker and Spyropoulos also all earned singles victories at the ITA Southern Regionals at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Postolka and Lusovsky, who partnered together in doubles play this past season, earned All-Conference USA Doubles Second Team honors in 2020-21 after posting a 7-4 record in doubles. All seven of their victories in the No. 1 position.
UAB finished 5-12 in 2020-21, earning victories over Alabama A&M, Tennessee State, Bellarmine, North Alabama and Jacksonville State.
The Blazers added three new student-athletes to their 2021-22 roster, including two right before UAB's spring season. Martin Vasquez, Noah Malige and Nir Vodavoz will make their spring season debuts for the Blazers in 2022.
MISSSISSIPPI STATE LATELY
Mississippi State, who was scheduled to open the spring portion of its schedule this past weekend against Tennessee Tech and Florida State, will now open 2022 against C-USA foes Middle Tennessee before facing UAB later in the afternoon.
The Bulldogs finished their 2020-21 campaign 18-10 with a 5-7 record in SEC play. Mississippi State was dominant at home this past season, posting a 13-3 record. The Bulldogs finished No. 15 in the ITA's final rankings on May 26.
Mississippi State advanced to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championships in 2020-21, knocking off Miami 4-1 before earning a 4-2 win over UCF. The Bulldogs' season came to a close in the Round of 16 with a 4-0 loss to Texas A&M.
Sophomore Nemanja Malesevic, a 2020-21 SEC All-Freshman Team honoree, returns for the Bulldogs this season after being tabbed the ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year in June.

The Blazers will return to Alabama for matches against Tennessee Tech on Jan. 29 in Homewood before closing the weekend against Jacksonville State on Jan. 30 in Jacksonville, Alabama.
