UAB Volleyball Hosts Tulane Green Wave Invitational

BIRMINGHAM - The Blazers will host the Green Wave Invitational this weekend at Bartow Arena. UAB will play Texas Tech and Sam Houston on September 17 at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively, and Tulane at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 18.

TOURNAMENT PREVIEW
The Blazers will look to build off the successful weekend they had at the Ram Volleyball Classic. Outside hitter Fernanda Maida is on a hot streak, currently leading the team in kills.
SCOUTING THE RED RAIDERS
Middle blocker Brooke Kanas has had an excellent senior season for the Red Raiders. She currently ranks first in the Big 12 in hitting percentage (.481%) and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Buffs Invitational.
This is the fourth meeting all-time between UAB and Texas Tech, and the first since 1993. The Red Raiders has won the previous three meetings.
SCOUTING THE BEARKATS
Sam Houston is currently on a two game losing streak, most recently falling to 3-0 to Rice. Ashley Lewis leads the Bearkats in kills, with 143 (3.76 kills per set).
SCOUTING THE GREEN WAVE
Tulane currently ranks second in the American Athletic Conference in hitting percentage. The Green Wave is paced by freshman sensation Michelle Urquhart, who leads the AAC in aces (15).
The Green Wave have been in Birmingham for over three weeks as a result of the athletic department's relocation to The Magic City following Hurricane Ida. Fans are encouraged to donate to The Greater New Orleans Foundation to assist Tulane Athletics in the additional costs it will face as a result of the hurricane. Tables will be set up in the Bartow Arena concourse with more information.
Admission to this weekend's tournament is free.
Due to the recent surge of COVID-19 and updated CDC guidance, UAB will require face masks indoors on campus – regardless of vaccine status – effective Thursday, July 29. Individuals can briefly unmask while eating or drinking.
