UAB Splits Two Matches at the Green Wave Invitational

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team split its first two matches of the Green Wave Invitational at Bartow Arena, earning a 3-1 victory over Sam Houston after falling 3-0 to Texas Tech earlier in the day. The Blazers (4-5) closed out Friday night with back-to-back set victories over Sam Houston to notch their fourth win of the season.
UAB 3, Sam Houston 1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23)
The Blazers and Kats battled back and forth throughout the night cap at Bartow Arena, having three of the match's four sets decided by just two points. Late Blazer runs in the first, third and fourth sets powered UAB to its second home victory of the 2021 campaign.
Fernanda Maida paced the Blazers with 24 kills while hitting .250 for the match. The junior outside hitter finished the match with a double-double, logging 11 kills to supplement her team-high 24 kills. Redshirt junior Alex Kells also registered double-double against Sam Houston, amassing 14 kills and 13 digs.
Sophomore setters Grace Koper and Lidya Canturk led the Green and Gold with 28 and 19 assists, respectively.
UAB (4-5) reeled off three of the final four points in the first set, capping off the opening-set victory behind a kill from Sam Gomez. After Sam Houston (7-4) knotted the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 win in the second set, the Blazers streamed together a 4-0 run and a 3-0 run in the second half of the third set to pull away from the Kats. Service aces from Kiana Mack and Kells fueled the short runs for the Blazers
The Blazers closed out the match with their second 25-23 set triumph of the night, breaking a 23-23 deadlock to earn a match victory. Kills from Maida and Kells sealed UAB's fourth win of the season and second at Bartow Arena.
UAB 0, Texas Tech 3 (17-25, 24-26, 18-25)
UAB dropped its opening match of the Green Wave Invitational in straight sets to the Red Raiders.
Fernanda Maida once again paced the Blazers in kills, hitting a blistering .378 for the match with 19 kills in just three sets. Maida also fell just one short of the team-high in digs, collecting seven of her own.
Setters Grace Koper and Lidya Canturk each reached double figures in assists, tallying 16 and 12, respectively.
Texas Tech (9-3) featured a balanced attack in its opening match of the weekend, sporting three hitters with double-digit tallies in kills. Karrington Jones led the Red Raiders with 11 kills while hitting an efficient .786 for the match.
After a 5-0 run helped Texas Tech pull away from the Blazers in the opening set, the Green and Gold fought off two set points to turn a 24-22 deficit into a 24-24 tie in the second stanza. Alex Kells trimmed the lead to one with a kill before a combined block from Tatijana Fucka and Sam Gomez knotted the match at 24-24. The Red Raiders would secure a win in the second set with back-to-back points following the block from the pair of Blazers.
Texas Tech capped off its three-set victory with four straight points to end the match. Kenna Sauer notched the match-clinching point for the Red Raiders.
The Blazers will conclude the Green Wave Invitational against Tulane on Saturday at 2 p.m. Sam Houston and Texas Tech will open day two of the Green Wave Invitational at 11:30 a.m.
