UAB Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The UAB volleyball team finished the Ram Volleyball Classic with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-14, 25-17) setback against host Colorado State on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers fall to 3-4 on the season.
Fernanda Maida tallied a match-high 21 kills, hit .474 and along with seven digs. Alex Kells added 14 kills. Lidya Canturk recorded team-highs with 19 assists and 11 digs. As a team, UAB had four aces and eight blocks.
The first set was played tight throughout with nine lead changes and 14 ties. Down 24-23, The Blazers got a pair of Kells kills sandwiched between a Maida ace to take the set 26-24.
With the second set tied at 3-3, CSU went on a 10-3 run to take a 13-6 lead. The Rams would increase their lead to 11 points at 21-10 before winning the set 25-15.
The Blazers played the Rams even for the first 22 points of the third set. However, a 14-3 run, which included winning the final seven points of set, gave them a 25-14 win and a 2-1 match lead.
After the fourth set started out 1-1, CSU took the lead on the next point and remained ahead for the duration. Trailing 21-11, the Blazers won the next seven points, but the Rams finished out the set by winning the last three points to take the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
Up next, the Blazers return home to Birmingham for the Green Wave Invitational. The event was originally scheduled to be played in New Orleans and hosted by Tulane. Due to the effects of Hurricane Ida and the Tulane athletic department's relocation to Birmingham, the event has moved to Bartow Arena. On Sept. 17 UAB will play Texas Tech at 12:30 and Sam Houston at 7 p.m. On Sept. 18, the Blazers face Tulane at 2 p.m.
