BIRMINGHAM –UAB women's tennis senior Jana Hecking has been selected as one of 14 winners of the Jim Castañeda Conference USA Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Hecking completed her degree in biomedical engineering in May with a 3.97 GPA.
The Arnsberg, Germany native led UAB to a 14-7 record, the most wins for the Blazers since 2007. The Blazers finished ninth in the final Oracle/ITA Southern Region rankings. UAB advanced to the quarterfinal round at the C-USA Championship for the first time since 2007.
For her career, she has recorded 75 total victories and was named to the Conference USA First Team Singles squad in 2019. Additionally, she has been a 2019 CoSIDA All-District IV At Large selection, earned the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal, been on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and received the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship - Southern Region.
"Jana has deservedly been racking up the awards during her time at UAB," said head coach Mark Tjia. "To be selected for the Jim Castañeda Scholarship Award for women's tennis in the conference is a great honor and a testament both to her character but also to the staff and culture of academics in our athletic department."
The 13th annual award is named in honor of Dr. Jim Castañeda who served Rice for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in 2008. Every season, C-USA grants the $4,000 scholarship to distinguished graduates selected by the league's Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
