Strong Second Round Moves UAB up Leaderboard at C-USA Championship

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's golf team had a strong showing in the second round of the Conference USA Championship by shooting a collective -7 on Tuesday at Texarkana Country Club.
Following Monday's 294 (+6), the Blazers shot 281 (-7) on Tuesday and are -1 for the tournament. UAB's -7 was the second lowest score in round two behind Middle Tennessee (-13), and the Blazers moved up one spot into fifth place. UAB is just four shots off the team lead.
UAB will have to move up one more spot on Wednesday to advance into the semifinals for match play. The big round for Middle Tennessee moved them to the top of the leaderboard at -5 overall, and the Blue Raiders are followed by Charlotte (-3), UTSA (-3), North Texas (-2) and UAB (-1).
Freshman Khavish Varadan shot a one under 71 (-1) in the second round and is tied for third place overall at -5. Varadan (68-71, -5) birdied 16 and 17 down the stretch to shoot under par for a second-consecutive round.
UAB was led by junior Nick Robillard and senior William Walker III on Tuesday who each shot a three under 69 (-3) in the second round. Both are now tied for 18th at even par following Monday's round of 75 (+3).
Robillard and Walker III each had seven birdies and four bogeys in the second round. Walker III birdied three straight holes (15, 16 and 17) down the stretch to help move him into the top 20.
Senior Drew Mathers (76-72) shot even par on Tuesday and moved up 14 spots into a tie for 29th place at +4.
Playing his first round of the tournament after head coach Mike Wilson made a switch in the lineup, sophomore Ethan Hagood carded a six over 78.
UAB tees off on Wednesday at 8 a.m. for the final 18 holes of stroke play. Due to inclement weather moving in on Thursday, match play semifinals will begin on Wednesday 30 minutes after the conclusion of stroke play.
