Varadan Leads Field After Round One of C-USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. – Freshman Khavish Varadan sits atop of the leaderboard after the first round of the Conference USA Championship at Texarkana Country Club in Arkansas.
Varadan carded a four under 68, which included birdies on 17 and 18 to help finish his day at -4. He was two under through seven holes, then had nine straight pars before birding his final two holes. In all, Varadan had five birdies and one bogey in his round.
Chad Sewell of UTSA also shot -4 as he joins Varadan as the leaders in the clubhouse after 18 holes.
As a team, the Blazers are tied for sixth place and have two more rounds to move into the top four and earn a spot in match play. UAB shot 294 (+6) and is five shots out of fourth place.
It was a rough start to the day as the Blazers found themselves all the way down in 11th place on the front nine. However, UAB weathered the storm and recovered nicely to move up into sixth at the end of the round.
Following Varadan, Senior William Walker III and junior Nick Robillard each shot three over and are tied for 31st place. Senior Drew Mathers was one shot behind at +4 and is tied for 43rd.
Sophomore John Snoddy rounded out UAB's lineup at +7 which has him tied for 56th.
UTSA (-5) leads after 18 holes, and is followed by Charlotte (-2), North Texas (E), Louisiana Tech (+1) and Southern Miss (+2). The top four teams after 54 holes of stroke play will advance to the semifinals and compete in match play.
