BIRMINGHAM — Fernanda Maida broke the program record for kills in a match with 28 in a five-set loss to UTSA Monday afternoon at Bartow Arena. UAB falls to 8-7, 7-5 CUSA and UTSA moves to 7-11, 5-7 CUSA.
"We are proud of the effort it took to get us to set five, but it was just too little too late, and we were unable to execute when it really mattered," head coach Betsy Freeburg said. "We found ourselves down 2-0, and when we made the decision we were going to come out for set three and play the right way and follow the game plan, we had success."
Abby Carlile and Tatijana Fucka had career-high days with six and eight blocks respectively. Lidya Canturk assisted on 24 kills and posted a career-high 14 digs. As a team, the Blazers matched a season-high with 12 blocks.
UTSA took the first two sets by a tally of 25-19 and 27-25. The Blazers answered back by taking sets three and four, 25-14 and 25-14. In a close fifth set, the Roadrunners pulled away to win the set, 15-13 and secure the 3-2 match victory.
"All in all, it was a successful weekend with celebrating Abby on Senior Day and earning our bid to the conference tournament," Freeburg added. "We have responded after each of our losses with an attitude determined to get better, and we are going to do just that as we prepare for the conference tournament."
The Blazers head to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the Conference USA Tournament April 1-3. Live stats and championship information can be found on the UAB volleyball schedule page.
