UAB Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Charlotte in C-USA Quarterfinals

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The UAB volleyball team fell in a five-set loss to Charlotte in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament Thursday evening at the USM Wellness Center.
Fernanda Maida broke the program record with 37 kills in the match. The mark also ties Maida for most kills this season in the NCAA. Alex Kells followed with 15 kills and 18 digs. Grace Koper assisted on a career-high 31 kills, while Lidya Canturk dished out 29 assists.
Charlotte took the first set, 25-19. In a close second set, UAB came away with the 25-22 win to tie the match at one set apiece.
The third set was back-and-forth the entire way. UAB held set point, 24-23, but the 49ers took the final three points for the 26-24 set win.
UAB was down 4-1 to begin set four. The Blazers used a seven-point run to take the lead, 14-12. After the Niners retook the lead, the Blazers moving in front and took the set, 25-21. Set five went the way of Charlotte for the 15-10 set and 3-2 match win.
