UAB Softball Drops a Pair of Games at WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The UAB softball team dropped its first two games against WKU on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers (13-12) sustained a 9-1 five-inning loss in the first game of the day and fell 7-6 in a WKU (13-4) walk-off win in game two of the doubleheader.
GAME 1: UAB 1, WKU 9 (5 innings)
WKU got off to an early lead to open the first of the three-game series, going up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
After a scoreless second inning, the Hilltoppers' bats exploded, scoring five runs off five hits and a UAB error, going up 6-0.
WKU was able to tack on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, widening their lead to 8-0.
UAB broke the shutout in the top of the fifth, with a KK Crocker RBI single scoring Olivia Valbak.
The Hilltoppers ended the game in the fifth by plating one run off a UAB error, earning the 9-1 victory.
Amy Woodham (2-6) pitched 2.2 innings, giving up 10 hits, six runs, four earned, and striking out two. Sarah Cespedes went 1.1 innings in the circle, allowing two hits, three runs, one earned, while Emily Kachel pitched .2 innings of relief.
GAME 2: UAB 6, WKU 7
In game two, it was UAB who held the early lead. With a three-run home run from Jenna Olszewski, the Blazers went up 3-0 in the top of the second. Olszewski's home run was her first since March 16, 2019.
In the bottom of the second, WKU responded with their own home run, a grand slam that put the Hilltoppers ahead 4-3.
The Green and Gold tied up the game with a Taylor Watford sac fly scoring Sierra Frazier in the third.
WKU hit their second homerun of the game in the fourth, a two-run shot to left field.
UAB was able to plate two runs in the fourth, the first on a WKU error and the second from Frazier who doubled down the left field line, scoring Sam Bean.
The Hilltoppers were able to walk the game off in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded.
Jaycee Cook (3-2) earned the loss, allowing six hits, one run and striking out three in 3.1 innings of work. Parker Conrad, who started the game, went 2.2 innings, allowing six hits, six runs and striking out four. Olivia Valbak pitched .2 innings of relief, allowing two hits.
UAB and WKU will conclude finish the last game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. CST.
