UAB Softball Splits Day Two of the Blazer Classic

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team split the second day of the Blazer Classic with a 2-0 victory over Samford and a 1-6 loss to Southern Illinois on Friday at Mary Bowers Field.
Analyse Petree had the hot bat for the Blazers, going a combined 4-4 in the two games with three doubles, one run scored and an RBI.
Sierra Frazier and KK Crocker also each had a combined three hits.
In the circle, Jaycee Cook (3-1) earned her third victory of season, helping to shutout Samford, while Amy Woodham had her first save this season.
GAME ONE: UAB 2, Samford 0
The Blazers' first game of the day proved to be a pitching duel.
UAB was able to go up 2-0 early, with a Taylor Watford RBI double scoring Analyse Petree and an RBI single from Faith Hegh scoring Sam Bean in the second inning.
The Blazers and the Bulldogs traded zeros the rest of the game. The best scoring opportunity for Samford came in the top of the seventh inning.
After the Bulldogs got a runner on base, Woodham came in for the save for UAB, closing out the game with a strikeout.
Cook, who pitched 6.1 innings, finished the matchup allowing no runs, four hits and striking out two.
GAME TWO: UAB vs. Southern Illinois
Two Blazer errors and five walked batters proved to be costly in UAB's 6-1 loss to Southern Illinois.
Despite the Blazers getting two hits in the bottom of the first and loading the bases after a walk and a hit by pitch, Southern Illinois was able to get out of the inning with no runs scored.
The Saluki offense capitalized on Blazers errors second inning, plating four runs on just two hits and going up 4-0.
An RBI double from Petree that scored pinch runner Chloe Bahruth in the third cut the lead to 4-1.
Southern Illinois tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth inning, sealing the victory and maintaining a perfect 16-0 record on the season.
Parker Conrad (3-2) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing six runs, four earned, striking out seven and walking five batters.
Emily Kachel, who pitched 1.2 innings of relief, allowed no hits and no runs and struck out one.
The Blazers (11-10) will be back in action again tomorrow at Mary Bowers Field for a 3 p.m. rematch with Southern Illinois and a 5:30 matchup with Ball State.
