BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team defeated Louisiana Tech 3-0 for the second time in as many days with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-14 victory over the Lady Techsters on Sunday at Bartow Arena.
Fernanda Maida recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs to lead the Blazers, while Alex Kells added a game-high 13 kills in the victory.
The duo of Maida and Kells led UAB (6-5, 5-3 C-USA) the entire weekend as they combined for 49 of the team's 80 kills throughout the two matches and each had double-digit spikes in both contests.

"After our first match, we challenged our team to play more disciplined defense, and we did just that today," head coach Betsy Freeburg said. "Louisiana Tech did a much better job handling our serve, and we had to earn our points in transition. We were able to get better while competing and these were two big wins for our program."
With the score tied 7-7 in the first set, UAB tallied four consecutive points, capped by a block assist from Kells and Fucka, which gave UAB an 11-7 lead and forced a Louisiana Tech (0-13, 0-6 C-USA) timeout. The lead would grow to as large as nine as UAB took set one comfortably, 25-19.
The second set was closely contests throughout and a 3-0 run gave the Lady Techsters a 14-11 lead midway through the frame. The Blazers responded with the next three points to tie the match and the set would be tied six more times until the score reached 20-20. From there, UAB scored three straight points for a 23-20 lead, and eventually took the set 25-22 with a kill by Kells.
UAB found itself trailing 8-4 early on in set three, but the Blazers outscored Louisiana Tech 21-6 for the remainder of the stanza to finish off the sweep with a 25-14 third set victory.
UAB had six service aces, bringing their weekend total to 16 in the two contests combined. The Blazers hit at a .233 clip on Sunday and held Louisiana Tech to just a .033.
