BIRMINGHAM – Redshirt junior Alex Kells had a game-high 14 kills and sophomore Fernanda Maida added 11 to lead the UAB volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Louisiana Tech on Saturday at Bartow Arena, 25-19, 25-9, 25-20.
Kells and Maida combined for 25 of UAB's 40 total kills as the Blazers hit .356 overall for the game. UAB (5-5, 4-3 C-USA) also added 10 service aces which contributed to the win.
Defensively, UAB held Louisiana Tech (0-12, 0-5 C-USA) to a .138 hitting clip while compiling six blocks. Libero Erin Powers had 12 of UAB's 39 digs to lead the Blazers in that category.
"Today we took advantage of the opportunity to compete, and had success playing clean Blazer volleyball," said head coach Betsy Freeburg. "One part of our winning equation is having efficient side out and our passers, setters and attackers all did their part to contribute. Our servers did a great job challenging Louisiana Tech's offense, and we were able to take advantage of them being out of system. We still have the ability to play more disciplined on defense, and we look forward to rising to that challenge tomorrow."
The two teams went back and forth early in the first set, but with the game tied at 11, UAB scored the next five points to take command at 16-11. UAB's largest lead of eight points (24-16) came on a kill by Chole Rodriguez, while Kells hit 6-of-8 (.750) in the frame.
UAB scored the first six points of the second set and cruised to a 25-9 victory to gain a 2-0 lead.
Kells once again led the offensive attack in the third set, hitting 7-of-10 in the frame en route to a .458 hitting percentage overall for the game. With the score 14-12 in favor of UAB, the Blazers scored the next two points to gain a four point advantage and would lead by no less than three points the remainder of the set.
UAB looks to complete the two game sweep over Louisiana Tech on Sunday when the two teams met inside Bartow Arena. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
