BIRMINGHAM — Sophomore Tyler O'Clair had his second quality start of the season to lead UAB baseball to a 9-2 victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday at Young Memorial Field.
O'Clair went 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts and did not give up an earned run for his second win of the season. Redshirt junior Tanner Rusk came to close out the game going 2.0 innings with four strikeouts and one hit allowed.
"Tyler was really good again for us," head coach Perry Roth said. "It's fun to watch his maturity and development on the mound. Tanner Rusk followed up with an outstanding performance, pounding the strike zone and allowing up to keep the bullpen rested. We started slow but once we got rolling, we put mature quality at bats together."
Alabama A&M (0-4, 0-0 SWAC) got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning following two errors by UAB (4-2, 0-0 CUSA).
After two scoreless innings for the Blazers, UAB broke through on an RBI triple by Jess Davis. In the next at-bat, Thomas Johnston sent a double to right field to tie the game at two. Senior J Paul Fullerton capped off the scoring in the inning with a one out single up the middle for the lead, 4-2.
The Green and Gold added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, Davis homered to right field for his second RBI of the game to bring the lead to five, 7-2.
With Caleb Floyd in scoring position, Blaine Smith singled to bring in the run in the eighth inning. A batter later, Davis scored Smith on a ground out to the Bulldogs' first baseman.
Alabama A&M looked to add more runs in the top of the ninth when Dillon Roop hit a double to right field. Rusk struck out the final two batters to close out the game and the series clinching win, 9-2.
"It's always fun to win a series, but Sundays are so important," Roth added. "Great teams finish strong."
