Blazer Baseball Tops Alabama A&M, 22-2

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team scored eight runs in the first inning as the Blazers won, 22-2, over Alabama A&M Friday night at Young Memorial Field.
Eighteen Blazers saw action in the contest, and 11 different players recorded hits. Junior Caleb Floyd led UAB (3-2, 0-0 CUSA) going 4-for-7 with five RBIs. Jess Davis, Thomas Johnston, Colton Schultz and John Marc Mullins added three RBIs each.
Right-handed pitcher Riley Davis earned his first win of the season going 7.0 innings with nine strikeouts, giving up four hits and an earned run.
"It was a fun night offensively and that would be the big story, but Riley Davis was outstanding," head coach Perry Roth said. "His line was the story of the day for me."
Colton Schultz led off the scoring for UAB with a two-run home run to right field in the first inning. The Blazers would add six more runs in the inning to lead, 8-0.
The fifth inning saw six Blazers cross home plate on five hits. Alabama A&M (0-3, 0-0 SWAC) scored two runs in top of the seventh when Janmikell Bastardo doubled down the right field line.
Floyd added a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh for the 21-2 lead. The final run of the night for UAB came in the eighth on a Jake Killingsworth sacrifice fly to right.
The Blazers' bullpen came in to throw two scoreless innings as Troy Cordrey and Matthew Reed gave up one hit in the final frames.
"I'm thrilled with the quality of our at-bats and the way we competed for nine innings," added Roth.
UAB and Alabama A&M will be back in action for game two at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Young Memorial Field. Live stats and streaming information for each game is available on the UAB baseball schedule page.

Fans, including Gold Card holders and students, will not be permitted to attend home baseball games played at Young Memorial Field. Attendees will be limited to the player pass list and limited premium spaces.
