BIRMINGHAM — The Blazers took the series over Valparaiso with a 4-1 win on Sunday at Young Memorial Field.
In his first collegiate start, Carson Knight threw a gem, going 3.2 innings with seven strikeouts and two hits.
"Carson was outstanding in his start today," head coach Perry Roth said. "It was one of those games that you have to grind through and bring across some runs. We played clean baseball again. It is an outstanding way to open the season with a series win."
UAB (2-1) and Valparaiso (1-2) were scoreless through the first four innings. Valpo's starting pitcher, Colin Fields, had a no-hitter going through 4.1 innings until Jess Davis hit a single to center to break it up.
The Blazers got on the board first in the bottom of the fifth with bases loaded as Zach Davis reached on an error from the shortstop to bring in Blaine Smith.
The next score for the Blazers came in the seventh when Zack Davis had a sacrifice fly out to center to score Jess Davis, for the 2-0 UAB lead.
UAB added two runs in the eighth from Colton Schultz. The lone score for Valparaiso came in the top of the ninth when Jake Kapers reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Kyle Schmack to cut the Blazer lead to three, 4-1. Valpo's threat came to an end with a pop out to first baseman J Paul Fullerton for the last out of the game.
UAB will be back in action Tuesday, Feb. 23 against Troy at 6 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field. Live stats and streaming information for each game is available on the UAB baseball schedule page.
