BIRMINGHAM — The Blazers earned their first win of the Perry Roth era in a strong offensive showing topping Valparaiso 8-2 on Saturday.
"Generally the team that plays clean baseball and executes with runners in scoring position wins," Roth said. "Today we played clean baseball."
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Tyler O'Clair had a solid outing, tossing six innings and giving up only two hits with eight strikeouts.
"Tyler was really good on the mound for us," added Roth. "He has continually gotten better every outing from the fall to the spring in our team practices and I thought today was a continuation of that for him."
The offense started early for UAB (1-1) en route to seven hits on the day. A single from Zack Davis in the third put the Blazers up 1-0. In the fourth, Colton Schultz reached on a bases loaded fielder's choice to score Pate Fullerton for the 2-0 Blazer advantage.
UAB brought home two runs in the sixth with RBIs from Jess Davis and Schultz to go up 4-0. Valparaiso (1-1) first got on the board with an RBI from Kaleb Hannahs to cut the Blazer lead to three.
The Blazers came back in the bottom of the eighth with four runs of their own. Jess Davis, Zack Davis, Ian Ladner and John Marc Mullins all drove in the runs to increase the lead to seven, 8-1.
Valpo had runners on the corners with one out in the top of the ninth. Jonathan Temple drove in a run on a single up the middle to add Valpo's second score of the game. Zach Fricke grounded out to first to end the game for the 8-2 Blazer victory.
UAB and Valpo will be back in action for series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Young Memorial Field. Live stats and streaming information for each game is available on the UAB baseball schedule page.
