BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team dropped the season opener against Valparaiso, falling 6-2 on Friday at Young Memorial Field.
"It was good to get out and compete again," head coach Perry Roth said. "The stat line that jumps out to you is four walks, two errors, two hit by pitches and a wild pitch. We can't put runners on or give batters extra chances."
Riley Davis started out the game for UAB (0-1) retiring the side with two strikeouts. In the bottom of the inning, Jess Davis doubled to center field to leadoff for the Blazers. Three batters later, Zack Davis produced a double of his own to drive in Jess Davis for the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Valparaiso (1-0) plated four runs with a four-run home run from Jeremy Drudge to take the lead, 4-1.
Valpo increased their lead to four after a single from Jonathan Temple in the top of the fourth.
The Blazers added a score in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Ian Ladner hit a double down the left line to get in scoring position. Two batters later, John Marc Mullins brought Ladner home with a double to left field. Valparaiso added an insurance run in the top of the eighth with a bases loaded walk.
Following a 1-2-3 ninth inning for both teams, Valparaiso closed out the game on top, 6-2.
UAB and Valpo will be back in action for game two of the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Young Memorial Field. Live stats and streaming information for each game is available on the UAB baseball schedule page.
