BIRMINGHAM – The No. 5 UAB men's golf team moved up one spot into third place in the second round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Crossings Course.
The Blazers raced out of the gates and were nine under par through nine holes before play was suspended due to weather. UAB ended up shooting 282 (-6) and find themselves in third place at -12 behind Illinois (-26) and Kent State (-15) entering Tuesday's final round.
"I'm really proud of the way the team competed today," head coach Mike Wilson said. "Drew came out really hot shooting a 30 on the front nine. We played great in the worst conditions. After the rain delay we just didn't have any putts fall and couldn't keep the momentum going."
Junior Nick Robillard is leading the Blazers and moved up five spots into a tie for fifth place after firing a three under 69 in the second round. Robillard is -5 after two rounds and will look to chase down Michael Feagles of Illinois who has the individual lead at -10.
It was senior Drew Mathers who made the biggest move in round two. After shooting a four over 76 in the first round, Mathers came out of the gates on fire on Monday and carded a 30 on the front nine. After the two-hour delay, he ultimately shot a four under 68 and moved up 40 spots into a tie for 24th at even par.
Fellow senior William Walker III is one shot ahead of Mathers after a second round 73 and is tied for 20th at -1.
Freshman Khavish Varadan shot an even par 72 for the second straight day and is tied with Mathers for 24th, as is Ethan Hagood who is participating as an individual. Like Varadan, Hagood has gone 72-72 in his first two rounds.
Junior Ben Reichert fell into a tie for 47th after a six over 78 on Monday. He is +4 for the tournament entering the final 18 holes.
The Mobile Bay Intercollegiate concludes on Tuesday and UAB will have to close a 14-shot gap to win its fourth tournament of the season. Live results can be found by clicking here.
