No. 5 UAB Places Fifth at Mobile Bay Intercollegiate

BIRMINGHAM – The No. 5 UAB men's golf team placed fifth at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate in its first tournament of the spring at Magnolia Grove Crossing hosted by South Alabama.
This is the first tournament UAB has not won this season, but with a record of 10-4 this week, the Blazers have improved to 39-4-0 overall this year.
UAB finished the tournament at -12 overall and placed behind Illinois (-37), Indiana (-20), Kent State (-16) and Louisville (-14). The Blazers had three players finish inside the top 20, led by senior Drew Mathers who tied for 14th overall.
Following an opening round 76 (+4), Mathers caught fire in the final two rounds and shot consecutive four under 68s to end the tournament.
Freshman Khavish Varadan tied for 17th overall at three under. After consecutive rounds of even par, Varadan shot -3 in the final round to move up seven spots.
Junior Nick Robillard was the third player inside the top 20 as he tied for 19th overall at two under par.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Ethan Hagood shot three straight rounds of 72 to finish the tournament tied for 27th at even par.
William Walker III (+3) finished tied for 39th and Ben Reichert tied for 64th at +11.
The Blazers now turn their attention to next Sunday where UAB will play travel to Oxford to face Ole Miss in match play.
