UAB Softball Drops a Pair of Games in 2021 Season Opener

TROY, Ala. – The UAB softball team dropped a pair of games to Ole Miss and Troy on the opening day of the 2021 season at Troy Softball Stadium.
The Blazers (0-2) sustained an 8-2 loss to Ole Miss in the first game of the day and an 8-0 defeat to Troy in five innings in game two.
GAME 1: OLE MISS 8, UAB 2
An early UAB error in the top of the second inning helped Ole Miss plate five runs on three hits to gain a 5-0 lead.
The Rebels held UAB scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore catcher Sierra Frazier went yard in her second at-bat of the game. Her solo shot brought the score to 5-1.
Ole Miss left fielder Jessica Puk answered in the top of the fifth with a home run, making the score 6-1.
UAB continued to battle and a single from freshman Olivia Valbak, plus a stolen base, resulted in her crossing the plate on an RBI single by junior Jolie Readeaux, bringing the score to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
Ole Miss added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning and held UAB scoreless in the bottom to win the season opener 8-2.
Amy Woodham (0-1) pitched 4.1 innings, giving up five hits, six runs (three earned) and stuck out three batters. Jaycee Cook pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, while Parker Conrad pitched the seventh inning, allowing two runs.
GAME 2: TROY 8, UAB 0 (5 Innings)
five errors ultimately doomed the Blazers in a 8-0 five inning loss to Troy in the UAB's second game of the day.
The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the third after Logan Calhoun reached on a fielding error, and following a single which moved her to third, Katie Webb's RBI single gave Troy a 1-0 advantage.
Troy broke the game open in the fourth with three runs on two hits and two fielding errors by the Blazers, which were a pair of dropped fly balls.
The Trojans had three doubles in the bottom of the fifth inning, and the third by Mia Jenkins made the score 7-0. Troy then walked it off on a fielding error by UAB which gave them the 8-0 victory.
Troy went undefeated on the day by also defeating Ole Miss.
