11/11/2021 1:14:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team will continue its three-game homestand to open the 2021-22 regular season when defending Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champion Morehead State comes to Birmingham on Friday for Salute to Service. Friday night's game at Bartow Arena will tip off at 6 p.m. and will be broadcasted on Stadium.
UAB is 1-0 all-time against the Eagles, defeating Morehead State 58-48 in 2014. The Blazers look to earn their 399th regular-season victory in Bartow Arena on Friday.
The Blazers' 25-point victory over UNC Asheville on Tuesday also helped UAB rise to No. 60 in the KenPom rankings, which is its highest ranking since February 2011.
UAB LATELY
The Blazers opened their 2021-22 season with an impressive offensive performance, topping the century mark in a 102-77 victory over Big South foe UNC Asheville. Five Blazers reached double figures with Jordan Walker and Quan Jackson leading the way with 19 points apiece. The UAB offense consistently shredded UNC Asheville's press, scoring 58 points in the second half and turning the ball over only six times.
MOREHEAD STATE LATELY
Morehead State opened the season with a 77-54 defeat at No. 22 Auburn on Tuesday. The Eagles struggled to get going early, falling behind 35-6 to open the game before clawing their way back into a 20-point deficit at the break. Morehead State fared much better in the second half, limiting the Tigers to 33 points while pouring in 30 points of their own. The reigning OVC Freshman of the Year Johni Broome paced the Eagles with 12 points, while junior Jaylen Sebree topped Morehead with 10 rebounds.
COMMON OPPONENTS
The Blazers and Eagles will only play one shared opponent this season -- ETSU. UAB's matchup against the Buccaneers is set for Dec. 1.
THE RACE TO TRIPLE DIGITS
The 2021-22 UAB men's basketball team surpassed 100 points in its season-opening exhibition on Nov. 1, getting fans in Bartow on their feet for a new era of offensive prowess under second-year head coach Andy Kennedy. On Tuesday, the Blazers did it "for real" with 102 points against UNC Asheville, exploding for 58 points in the second half. UAB's 102 points on Tuesday marked only the third time the Blazers have eclipsed 100 points in a regular-season opener and the only time they've done it against a Division I opponent.
EXPECTATIONS WELCOMED
In October, the league's coaches selected UAB as the favorite to win the Conference USA regular season championship. The Blazers, who won a league-best 13 C-USA games this past season, earned eight of the 14 first-place votes.
PICKING POCKETS
With 14 steals in their season-opening win against UNC Asheville, the Blazers tied a record during the Andy Kennedy era for steals in a game. The Blazers recorded 14 steals in a win over Rust College in February. The Green and Gold have now registered 10 steals or more nine times since the start of the 2020-21 season.
"JELLY" TIME
Transfer point guard Jordan "Jelly" Walker opened his UAB career with a bang in Tuesday night's victory over UNC Asheville, pouring in 19 points to go along with a team-high five assists. Walker finished his regular-season debut with the Blazers by going 8-of-11 from the field.
AK CLOSING IN ON 300
After posting his 11th 20-win season in 2020-21, Andy Kennedy sits just 11 wins away from posting his 300th career victory as a collegiate head coach. His first opportunity to reach 300 wins would come against his longtime mentor and friend Bob Huggins, who enters his 15th season at West Virginia in 2021-22.
