WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
- UAB returns to the site of where it won the 2020 Conference USA Championship. The Blazers defeated Marshall 22-13 in Huntington to capture the team's second Conference USA Championship in the last three years.
- Saturday is a must-win for the Blazers to remain on pace with UTSA for the West title. If UAB can defeat Marshall, it would set up a battle for command of the West division in San Antonio next weekend.
- This game features the two winningest teams in Conference USA since 2017. UAB has a league-best 40 wins in that span, while Marshall has compiled 38 total victories.
- The Blazers' 22nd ranked defense will be tested this Saturday against the nation's eighth ranked offense in Marshall. Herd quarterback Grant Wells ranks top 10 nationally in passing yards (2,858), while running back Rasheen Ali leads the nation with 17 rushing touchdowns.
- UAB also boasts weapons in the backfield as running back DeWayne McBride is the reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week. McBride is coming off a game in which he had 210 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries, good for an average of 15 yards per carry.
- McBride's four rushing touchdowns were the second most single game rushing touchdowns in school history, while his 210 yards were seventh most. He now has 837 rushing yards and eight touchdowns this season while ranking seventh nationally in yards per carry (7.0).
- Over his last three games, McBride is averaging 147.3 rushing yards per game and goes up against a Marshall run defense that ranks last in Conference USA, allowing 209.4 yards per game.
- The UAB offense is coming off a season-high 295 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in the 52-38 victory over Louisiana Tech. UAB put up 477 yards of total offense – its second highest total of the season – and has now had over 400 yards of total offense in five of nine games this season.
- UAB quarterback Dylan Hopkins is the league's second most efficient passer (161.21). The junior is completing 61.2 percent of his passes, and despite seeing limited action in the first two games of the season, has thrown for 1,473 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions this season.
- Antonio Moultrie is coming off back-to-back 10 tackle games against Rice and Louisiana Tech and returns to Marshall where he had a team-high nine tackles in the championship game last year. Moultrie is having a huge year on the defensive line and ranks second on the team with 42 total tackles to go along with two sacks, three TFL and a forced fumble.
- UAB had eight pass breakups last week and the secondary will be tested against Marshall's air-raid offense. Cornerback Starling Thomas V had a career-high five of the team's eight PBU's last week.
