BIRMINGHAM – Softball season is almost here! There is so much to be excited about in Birmingham as the UAB softball team opens its schedule up on Feb. 12 in Troy, Ala. The team welcomes nine newcomers to the roster for the 2021 season. UABSports.com will introduce you to these new Blazers and provide unique opportunities to get to know them.
Today's 'Meet the Blazers' profile features a freshman outfielder, Makalah Mitchell.

Position: Outfielder
Height: 5-8
Hometown: Summerfield, N.C.
High School: Northern Guilford
What is your favorite thing about your hometown?
MM: "My favorite thing about (Summerfield) is my family and friends."
What has been your favorite part of Birmingham so far?
MM: "Meeting new people, getting to play softball and the barbecue."
Did you play any other sports growing up?
MM: "I played basketball and volleyball, too."
Why do you wear the number 27?
MM: "I wear the number 27 because it is my lucky number and also Jennie Finch wore it."
Why did you choose UAB?
MM: "I chose UAB because its nursing program is ranked nationally, and I loved the softball atmosphere the coaches provide."
Do you have any siblings? If so, what are their names and how old are they?
MM: "I have four siblings. I have two brothers, Dakari (20) and Braison (16) and twin sisters Hasanna and Jasanna (15).
Who is your biggest inspiration?
MM: "My mom is my biggest inspiration because she gets stuff done and proves everyone wrong. She is the definition of a boss."
Do you remember what you wanted to be when you grew up?
MM: "A nurse."
What do you want to be now?
MM: "I still want to be a nurse!"
What are you majoring in?
MM: "Currently majoring in kinesiology, but I am switching to nursing."
Do you have a favorite quote?
MM: "Do not ever let anyone make you feel like you don't matter, or like you don't have a place in our American story, because you do. And you have a right to be exactly who you are." - Michelle Obama
What is your favorite TV show to binge watch?
MM: "Grey's Anatomy."
What do you like to do in your free time?
MM: "Hangout with friends."
If you could have any actress play you in a movie about your life who would it be?
MM: "Kerry Washington."
What is your favorite meal/food?
MM: "Macaroni and cheese."
If you could live anywhere in the world where would you live?
MM: "Anywhere with a beach!"
What is your favorite book?
MM: "Born a Crime by Trevor Noah."
What are you looking forward to most in your first softball season at UAB?
MM: "I'm looking forward to making memories with my teammates and playing for a conference championship."
