Blazers Drop to Lipscomb in Spring Opener, 3-0

NASHVILLE — The UAB volleyball team fell in their spring 2021 opener 3-0 at Lipscomb on Friday.
"Unfortunately, the outcome tonight did not end up as we wish but the shining light was our defensive effort," head coach Betsy Freeburg said. "We did a good job slowing down a team that had a very good opening weekend. We are looking forward to playing at home tomorrow and seeing home much we can improve with a short turnaround.
NOTEABLES
Fernanda Maida and Kiana Mack lead all players in blocks with five. Maida also added 11 kills. Sophomore Lidya Canturk produced 11 assists. Freshman Caroline Stogner set a career-high four kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bison held the advantage in aces (9-0), kills (40-23) and digs (46-37). The Blazers held the overall advantage in blocks (10-6).
In the first set, Lipscomb (3-0) took the early 8-1 lead. UAB (0-2) went on a 4-0 in the middle of the set to get within seven points. Lipscomb's Megan Kuper sealed the set point on a kill, 25-15.
UAB opened the second set on a 4-1 run off of three attack errors by the Bison. The Blazers kept the momentum going up 8-4 before Lipscomb took the next nine points. The Bison won the set 25-16.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle the entire way. A pair of four-point runs moved the Bison to a 21-19 lead. Lipscomb closed out the match following an ace from Ashley Maher to take the sweep.
UP NEXT
The Blazers continue the home-and-home series with Lipscomb tomorrow at Bartow Arena. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
Bartow Arena will accommodate fans with social distancing measures in place. Fans will be asked to practice social distancing and sit in available seats. Masks are required at all times per state and county ordinances.
