Freeburg Earns First Career Win in Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB volleyball team earned its first win of the season in a three-set sweep of Lipscomb Saturday night.

"We are proud of how the Blazers rebounded today," head coach Betsy Freeburg said. "With this unique back-to-back schedule, the second night is all about the team who is able to learn the quickest from the night before. Our team came into film today with a determination to get better. This was a huge moment for our program and we believe this is only the beginning."

KEYS TO VICTORY

Freeburg earned her first career win.
Fernanda Maida recorded 16 kills and a .341 hitting percentage.
Lidya Canturk recorded 13 assists.
Caroline Stogner set a career-high in kills with seven.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blazers led the Bison in a majority of statistical categories kill (40-28), assists (24-21), digs (42-35) and hitting percentage (.222-.093). Lipscomb lead in service aces (6-5).

Lipscomb (3-1) jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first set. UAB (1-2) went on a four-point run to bring the match within one. The Blazers pulled away in the end to win the set 25-21.

UAB was down 6-12 at one point in set two. Brianna Muller served back-to-back aces The Blazers went on an 8-0 run at the end of the set to win 25-22.

It was a back-and-forth battle in the third frame. The set was tied nine times, but UAB went on a six-point run to take the 22-19 lead. Tatijana Fucka got the kill that sealed the sweep fo the Blazers, 25-20.

UP NEXT
The Blazers head on the road to Denton, Texas for two matches against North Texas. The first match is set for Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. with match two the following day at 12 pm.
