WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
- With Tyler Johnston III sidelined, redshirt freshman quarterback Bryson Lucero is in line to make his first collegiate start. Lucero has appeared in each of UAB's first two games and has thrown for 138 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.
- Lucero has the luxury of a veteran offensive line that has only allowed one sack in two games. Also in the backfield is UAB record-setting running back Spencer Brown.
- The nation's second active leading rusher (3,323 yards), Brown is averaging 100.5 yards per game in his first two contests of the season and has scored two touchdowns. Brown is three rushing touchdowns shy of becoming UAB's record holder in that category. The Warrior, Ala. native has 33 career rushing touchdowns and is inching closer to Pat Green's record of 35 from 1991-94.
- Myron Mitchell is coming off a game at Miami in which he set career highs in catches (8) and yards (117). He and Austin Watkins Jr. are UAB's top two receivers as Mitchell has 12 catches for 164 yards and a TD, while Watkins Jr. has hauled in 10 catches for 104 yards and a touchdown.
- Watkins Jr. and Hayden Pittman carry reception streaks into South Alabama as Watkins Jr. has had a catch in every game of his career (20-straight) while Pittman has a catch in 18 straight games. Both streaks date back to the 2018 season.
- Redshirt junior linebacker Noah Wilder is coming off a game at Miami in which he had a career-high 15 tackles. He and Kristopher Moll are the team's two leading tacklers as Moll has 19 stops and Wilder 15.
- The Blazer defense has tallied four sacks and 14 TFL this season. UAB has finished Top 10 nationally in total defense in each of the last two seasons, and looks to regain its form against South Alabama. UAB is currently 28th nationally in total defense. Last year against South, the Blazers allowed just 190 yards of total offense.
- Graduate transfer defensive tackle Tyree Turner will be returning to South Alabama to face his former team. Turner spent four years at USA, but missed all of last season with an injury. He was an All-Sun Belt Conference player in 2018 and is off to a strong start as a Blazer with seven tackles, two TFL and a fumble recovery.
- UAB has nine players on its roster from the Mobile area. Those players include Tyler Johnston III, Thomas Johnston, Hayden Pittman, Jermain Brown Jr., Samario Rudolph, Matthew Trehern, Matt Quinn, Wilson Beaverstock and Brady Wilson.
- The Jags are 1-1 after opening the season with a 32-21 victory at Southern Miss and a 27-24 home loss to Tulane.
- UAB's defensive backs will be challenged as South Alabama has thrown for 684 yards in two games for an average of 342.0 yards per game. South plays a two quarterback system and has two receivers with over 200 yards receiving (Jalen Tolbert – 268 yard, 2 TD; Kawaan Baker – 211 yards, 2 TD).
