CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UAB men's golf team won its second straight tournament to open the 2020-21 season by capturing the team title at the Scenic City Collegiate hosted by Chattanooga at The Honors Course.
UAB is now undefeated to start the season and has a record of 20-0-0 heading into next week's tournament which the Blazers host at Greystone Country Club.
"I am so proud of this team being able to manage a very difficult course and come out with another victory," said reigning Conference USA Coach of the Year Mike Wilson. "Being tied heading into today's final round, the guys showed their mental toughness and saved their best golf for last. I am excited to see what they will do next week when we host the Graeme McDowell Invitational."
The Blazers shot +14 overall at the very challenging Honors Course, and carded the tournament's low round of 287 in the final round (296-295-287 = 878, +14). UAB pulled away from East Tennessee State (+20), Georgia Southern (+29), Little Rock (+29) and Chattanooga (+47), who rounded out the top five.
Reigning Conference USA Freshman of the Year Khavish Varadan recorded his first collegiate Top 5 finish by placing second overall at +2 in leading the Blazers to victory. Varadan improved steadily throughout the tournament and recovered from an opening round 78 to shoot 71-69 in his final two rounds. Varadan was tied for 26th after the first round and shot up the leaderboard to register his best collegiate finish.
Junior Nick Robillard, who was named Conference USA's Golfer of the Week for winning the Jim Rivers last week, tied for fifth overall at +4. Robillard's 70 in the final round helped him move up nine places into the top five (74-76-70 = 220, +4).
Sophomore Ethan Hagood also recorded the best collegiate finish of his career by tying for seventh place overall. Hagood demonstrated consistent golf throughout all three rounds (73-74-74 = 221, +5) and never found himself outside the Top 10 for the entire tournament.
Senior Drew Mathers (81-74-74 = 229, +13) recovered from a shaky start to finish tied for 18th overall. William Walker (+19, T30) and John Snoddy (+27, 49th), rounded out UAB's lineup.
As previously mentioned, the Blazers are set to host the Graeme McDowell Invitational next Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 29-30, at Greystone Country Club – Founders Course.
