RUSTON, La. – In its first tournament of the 2020-21 season, the UAB men's golf team won the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in dominant fashion by 14 strokes at Squire Creek Club hosted by Louisiana Tech.
Along with winning the overall team title, junior Nick Robillard (67-68-72 = 207) led the field wire-to-wire en route to winning his first individual collegiate tournament. Robillard finished the three-day event at -9 and won by four strokes.
"What an emotional victory!" said head coach Mike Wilson. "This was our first tournament back after getting shut down in March and I am so happy for all the guys on the team – it was truly a team effort. I am also thrilled for Nick. He's worked really hard the last couple of months and it is starting to pay off for him."
UAB finished at -21 overall, which was 14 strokes clear of South Alabama (-7). The Blazers had three of the top four finishers in the field as seniors Drew Mathers and William Walker III each tied for third place overall at four-under.
Reigning C-USA Freshman of the Year Khavish Varadan carded a three-under 69 in Tuesday's final round to move up 13 spots and finish 17th overall at +1.
Ethan Hagood (+6, T30) and Ben Reichert (+9, T45) rounded out UAB's championship efforts.
The Blazers have won the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in two of the past three years after also taking the team title in 2018.
UAB now turns its attention to the Scenic City Classic hosted by Chattanooga next Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 21-22, at The Honors Course.
