Former UAB guard Jamarr Sanders recently finished his first season with Derthona Basket of the Italian Serie A2 League. The team is located in Tortona, which is 125 miles northwest of Rome.
Sanders joined Derthona in January 2020 and averaged 13.2 points per game while shooting 52.9 percent from the field in the team's final six games of the season.
Prior to Derthona, he was a member of Gaziantep of the Turkish Basketball Super League playing in nine contests in the Fall of 2019.
No stranger to Italy, Sanders also played for Italian squads Veroli, Aquila and Pallacanestro. He began his European career with KAOD in the top-tier level Greek Basket League. Sanders also spent time with Telekom Baskets Bonn in the Basketball Bundesliga, highest level pro basketball league in Germany.
Sanders also had a two year stint with the Austin Toros of the NBA D League, the affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs, where he led them to the 2012 D League title.
As a Blazer, Sanders played two seasons in Birmingham where he averaged 17.8 points per game his senior season. After leading UAB to 22 wins and their first-ever Conference USA outright regular season championship, he was named to the 2011 C-USA First Team and to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 11 First-Team. The Blazers earned a berth in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, falling to Clemson in the First Four.
In his junior season, Sanders averaged 10.4 points per contest, while being part of a squad that racked up 25 victories and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NIT.
