UAB Earns Fourth Consecutive ITA Community Service Award

Hecking Wins Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award
ORLANDO – The UAB women's tennis team has won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southern Regional Community Service Award as announced by the association today. This marks the fourth straight year the Blazers have taken home the award.
The Blazers have done wagon washing at Children's of Alabama, put on a tennis clinic at Highland Park Racquet Club, participated in the Youth Goalball Regional Tournament at the Lakeshore Foundation and meal packing for Rise Against Hunger. Additionally, the team volunteered at for the Ronald McDonald House, Lovelady Thrift Store and the UAB Engineering Fair.
Additionally, Jana Hecking was awarded the Southern Regional Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award. This is awarded to the student-athlete who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. The award dates back to 1997 and is in memory of the late and widely admired Penn women's tennis coach Cissie Leary.
The national winners of the awards will be announced next Monday during a special virtual awards ceremony. The awards ceremony can be viewed on the ITA's Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube channels.
