BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's tennis team had an strong finish to the 2020 season, winning eight consecutive matches before the season was canceled on March 16.
And the strong finish carried over into the classroom. The team's cumulative grade point average for the 2020 Spring semester was an amazing 3.9. All eight student-athletes earned a spot on the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher for the 2019-20 academic year and five were recognized with the C-USA Commissioners' Academic Medal for earning a 3.75 GPA or higher for the 2019-20 academic year.
To add to the academic accomplishments, women's tennis was one of seven UAB programs that earned NCAA recognition for academic excellence after scoring in the top 10% in the most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) results. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. These rankings are based on a four year APR period ending with the 2018-19 academic year.
"This team continues to impress me with their achievements in the classroom," said head coach Mark Tjia. "This is the second semester in a row with a 3.9 team GPA which is pretty incredible, especially when you consider all the turmoil, uncertainty, and emotion of the past few months. I could not be more proud of the focus, discipline, and character of these student athletes."
